Our Story
Founded in the spring of 2015, The Barn for Equine Learning is nestled within 40 peaceful, wooded acres in Lowell, MI. It is a sanctuary where people come to connect, learn, and grow in an environment that fosters presence and healing. Like many who visit, The Barn has experienced its own journey of hardship, resilience, and transformation.
It began with humble beginnings—no barn, just an open field, a trailer serving as a hitching post, and wooded trails as an arena. Yet, through determination and perseverance, The Barn achieved its first milestone: building a beautiful shelter to house its beloved horses. This space quickly became more than just a structure; it was a gathering place, offering refuge from spring rains and warmth through Michigan’s harsh winters.
Tragedy struck in April 2017 when a devastating fire destroyed the original barn and claimed the lives of thirteen cherished horses. The loss was immeasurable, deeply impacting not only The Barn’s team but also the many community members who found solace in its programs. Yet, from this heartbreak emerged an unshakable resolve. The overwhelming support from the community, coupled with steadfast determination, fueled The Barn’s rebirth.
Since then, The Barn has grown stronger, expanding both its herd and its mission. At the heart of its work is equine-assisted therapy, where horses serve as partners in healing. Through carefully designed programs, individuals of all ages—whether struggling with trauma, anxiety, developmental disabilities, or emotional challenges—find comfort, confidence, and growth in the presence of these gentle animals. Guided by trained professionals, participants engage in activities which foster self-awareness, emotional regulation, and resilience.
More than just a place, The Barn for Equine Learning is a testament to hope, healing, and the profound power of connection. Whether offering a steady presence for a child overcoming fear, providing therapeutic support for those in need, or carrying an experienced rider through new challenges, our horses play an invaluable role in the journey toward well-being.
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
We are committed to promoting diversity, equity and inclusion through our programs and the way we welcome every person who walks through The Barn doors.
Our vision and mission reflect our fundamental belief that all people belong here and deserve fairness, equal participation, access to services and inclusivity. We will not tolerate discrimination, biases, harassment, or bullying of any kind. Regardless of race, socio-economic status, age, disability, religion, sexual orientation, nationality, gender, or marital status, we are an organization that celebrates the diversity of our community.
The Barn is proactive in reaching out to diverse populations, such as residential programs for youth in foster care, residents living in assisted living, people living in poverty and those experiencing developmental/physical disabilities.
The Barn incorporates DEI practices into every program we run. Through the You Belong Here programs, we offer experiences that range from increasing horsemanship and riding skills, deepening mindfulness and enriching lives through counseling services. You Belong Here includes riding lessons, herd meditation, therapy services, community events, youth summer camps and more.
The Barn also offers Strong Futures through Equine Connections, which provides pro bono and low cost services to individuals and organizations experiencing financial hardship so that everyone can have access to impactful equine programming. Equine programs and mental health services have often been accessible to primarily affluent populations, but The Barn recognizes the importance of making equine services available to all. Additionally, due to The Barn’s rural location, the mental health services provided at The Barn offer access in an area with limited counseling services available.
